Patrick Gallagher was awarded his Diploma in Funeral Directing in 1971 and in 1975 he became a fully qualified embalmer and member of The British Institute of Embalmers. He is a past chairman of The Independent Funeral Directors College and is a past national president of both The British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD) and The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF). Sandy Gallagher is a trained bereavement counsellor and can offer advice and information as required.
Matthew Gallagher joined the family business in 2011, returning to West Sussex after living and working in London and Australia. Based in both Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, Matthew is involved in all aspects of the funeral business and is a qualified assessor and internal verifier for the Independent Funeral Directors College. Matthew is a member of the SAIF Charter Executive Committee and is also the burial registrar for Cuckfield and Walstead Cemeteries.
Paul Bowley was born in Brighton; growing up in Woodingdean he attended Rudyard Kipling infants then Whitehawk Junior and Secondary schools. In 1980 Paul started work as a coffin maker with W A Stringer & Son in Kensington Gardens, and G Newman in Trafalgar Street. Paul went on become the funeral director for Frank Davey in Hurstpierpoint, moving to Hassocks to establish Bowley Funeral Service with Pat and Sandy in 1999. Paul has served as National President for the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), and a member of the Rotary Organisation since 1987.
Sue Vickery started to work closely with us when we opened our premises in Burgess Hill in 2010. With a background in financial services, Sue is our Finance Director and Accounts Manager. She also works closely with local families arranging funerals in Haywards Heath and is a specialist advisor for Golden Charter Funeral plans.
Grahame Green returned to P & S Gallagher in 2010 as Funeral Director in the Haywards Heath office, having started his career in the funeral business in 1996 with Pat and Sandy. In the interim Grahame worked as a Funeral Director in Cranleigh, Surrey. He brings vast experience of arranging and conducting funerals and a truly personal understanding of bereaved families’ needs.
Shayne Hilbourne came to P & S Gallagher in 2009, initially as a funeral arranger in Haywards Heath. She qualified in 2012 with the Certificate in Funeral Practice from the Independent Funeral Director’s College and now works as Funeral Director in our Burgess Hill office. Shayne is wholly dedicated to working with the bereaved and is also a specialist advisor for Golden Charter Independent Way funeral plans; Shayne is happy to meet with clients in either of our offices or their own home if preferred.
Paul Mitchell is our Company Administrator based in Burgess Hill; Paul lives in Balcombe and worships at St Mary’s Church. After a successful career in banking, Paul spent the next 10 years in a range of positions in the charity and church sector. He has been a highly successful fundraiser, as well as volunteering at the Kibera slum school in Nairobi. Since joining the team in 2015 Paul has enrolled on the Certificate in Funeral Practice at the IFD College.
Lucy Griffin joined the P & S Gallagher team in April 2018. Lucy lives in Burgess Hill and started working in the care industry in 2013 specialising in dementia care. Before joining us, she spent two years managing an office for a large funeral company in Brighton. Lucy is excited to be joining an independent family run business and has enrolled with the IFD College to complete her qualifications over the next few years.
Simon Green is Grahame’s son, and has been working with us for the past seven years. Starting as a part time bearer, Simon is now our full time funeral operative and is responsible for stock control and the day to day running of our workshops and garages. As well as leading our team of pall bearers, Simon also maintains the excellent standard of our fleet of vehicles and is a key part of the on-call team.
Michael Brett started work for us in 2008 as part of our bearing team and now works alongside Simon in our mortuary, workshops and garages. His local knowledge is without equal and attention to detail is second to none. Mike keeps a close eye on all our vehicles, as well as working alongside Mel on care of the deceased. Mike is often our hearse driver, leading the pallbearing team.
Davina Docherty joined us in 2015, working closely with Pat and Paul on the stonemasonry side of the business. Davina previously worked for an American software company as the office manager for the UK, middle east, South Africa and Scandinavia. With strong attention to detail and administration, Davina is now training in stonemasonry. When she is not trekking around local churchyards and cemeteries, Davina can be contacted in Burgess Hill.
Mel Barnes is our resident embalmer. Mel is married with two children, whose arrival led to a career change and her studying at the London School of Embalming. Mel achieved the highest practical examination mark in the southern region at the British institute of Embalmers and was consequently awarded the Alan Sinclair Cup of the Trustees Award in 2010.
